Meet JC

jc-bioJuan Carlos “JC” Bermudez is the founding Mayor of the City of Doral and served in that capacity for the first 9 1/2 years of the city’s existence from 2003-2012. Mayor Bermudez returned to run as mayor in 2016 at the request of petitions from fellow residents. He defeated the incumbent Mayor and former Vice-Mayor in a landslide winning the runoff by 34% points. He has served as Mayor this term since December 2016 to the present.

During Mayor Bermudez original two terms the new city’s infrastructure was created which included the creation of the city’s award-winning Finance and Parks departments. Mayor Bermudez’ administration built all of the original parks in our city, the brand-new Doral City Hall and Government Building, the city-wide bike path and created the Doral Trolley System. During the term beginning in 2016 Mayor Bermudez’ administration completed Doral Legacy Park, Doral Glades Park and is completing the Doral White Course Park. In addition, his administration has successfully begun the implementation of the 2018 voter approved Parks Improvement Bond that will build additional facilities, extend the city bike path and bring an aquatic center, community center, amphitheater and additional courts and ballfields to Doral Central Park.

Under Mayor Bermudez’ administration the City of Doral claimed its fair share of the half–penny sales tax which Miami Dade County was denying to pay to the city. Under Mayor Bermudez leadership, the City of Doral successfully eliminated the mitigation tax, saving over $30 million dollars annually to the city.

Mayor Bermudez, along with local and state leaders, led the fight to keep the United States Southern Command in Doral. Mayor Bermudez served as a President of Miami Dade County League of Cities in 2011 and is presently the Second Vice President of the organization. He has served and presently serves as a Board member of the Florida League of Cities, Florida League of Mayors and is an Advisory Board member of the United States Conference of Mayors. He is a past Chair of the United States Conference of Mayors International Committee.

During Mayor Bermudez’ most recent term Doral was named the 22nd best place to live in the United States by Money Magazine in 2018 and named a top 20 ‘All American City” by the National Civic League.

Mr. Bermudez graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his law degree (juris doctorate) from the University of Notre Dame Law School. He has practiced law in South Florida for the past 28 years and is member of the Florida Bar and the American Bar Association amongst other legal associations. He is a partner at SMGQ Law.

Mr. Bermudez has been married to Vivian Bermudez, a special education teacher, for 29 years and they have three children: Eneida Marie 25, Elena Catherine 21 and Elisa Nicole 10 years of age. Their family has resided in Doral for the past 22 years.
